Two students in the Advanced Criminal Appeals Clinic appeared before the Illinois Appellate Court, First District, for oral argument on May 5, 2021. After working on the appellate briefs for each client and obtaining their 711 licenses, 3L's Mary Katherine Ballow and Sydney Warda each appeared before the Appellate Court by Zoom, the first time either student had appeared before a court of review. Both students were warmly received by the Court and did an excellent job presenting their cases and answering the many challenging questions from the Justices. The Criminal Appeals Clinic faculty are very happy and proud that both students seized this opportunity to advocate for their client and develop their appellate litigation skills. The Criminal Appeals and Advanced Criminal Appeals Clinics continue to develop students’ research, writing, analysis, and advocacy skills.
