3L Spotlight: Alec Deborin

Alec Deborin started studying health law at DePaul University College of Law after completing a bachelors in History from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He joined the Jaharis Health Law Institute (JHLI) as a 1L and remained an active member, eventually becoming its Co-Director of Recruitment and Outreach. JHLI has provided many opportunities for Alec to learn and excel in health law; he has fully immersed himself through the JHLI lecture series, writing articles for E-Pulse and the DePaul Health Care Journal of Law, participating in health law moot court competitions, and attending healthcare symposiums.

Alec has worked in the healthcare industry from a variety of different angles by representing practitioners, hospitals, individual patients, and working for the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) in the regulatory public sector. He currently works at Malecki & Brooks Law Group, LLC, largely contributing to the firm’s representation of Norwegian-American Hospital as the hospital’s corporate counsel. He also worked at Taxman, Pollock, Murray & Bekkerman, LLC throughout his 2L year, learning about personal injury practice. Following his 2L year, Alec interned in the Medical Prosecutions Unit at the IDFPR. There, Alec was able to use his 7/11 license to litigate under attorney supervision. He has questioned physicians under IDFPR investigation over a variety of legal issues and has co-chaired for the IDFPR in administrative hearings. Alec plans to continue working at Malecki & Brooks Law Group LLC while he prepares for the bar exam.

Certain classes stood out to Alec during his law school career. He particularly enjoyed Fraud and Abuse, taught by Professor Schostok and various guest lecturers, because it piqued his curiosity within this emerging area of healthcare law. He also appreciated Health Policy & the Law, which provided a comprehensive and engaging assessment of healthcare law as a whole. Alec strongly recommends this class for anyone wishing to’ gain a better understanding of the country’s healthcare system. Alec advises all first year and second year students to immerse themselves in the countless organizations that DePaul offers and thinks it is especially important to approach networking with an open mind, as the legal field is close-knit and collaborative.
