3L Spotlight: Tyler Scheid

Tyler Scheid graduated from DePaul University College of Law in May 2014 with a Certificate in Health Law. Tyler shared with the E-Pulse some things that sparked his interest in health law, his experiences as a law student, advice for future law students, and his goals for the future.

Tyler came to DePaul as a graduate of Yale University, with a B.A. in History of Science and History of Medicine. With a continued interest in medicine and healthcare, health law was a very logical path for Tyler. His favorite classes at DePaul were “Medicare Fraud and Abuse”, “Health Delivery Systems”, and “Healthcare Policy and Regulations.” These classes exposed Tyler to current healthcare issues and prepared him to discuss important topics when networking. This confidence was evident in job interviews and turned out to be a huge part of Tyler’s success.

During law school, Tyler externed with the General Counselor at Adventist Hinsdale, with the Office of Health Information Technology (OHIT), and participated in the Summer Scholars Program with an FQHC named Aunt Martha’s. From these diverse externship opportunities, Tyler was able to gauge his true interests. He learned that, because all practice settings have advantages and disadvantages, it is important to expose yourself to a variety of settings before selecting a particular type of work.

Advice for future law students, Tyler emphasizes the importance of resume building. He says it’s critical that employers can immediately tell what your interests and focus areas are. Anyone should be able to look at your resume and see a clear trajectory for success. Although it is important to have diverse experiences, specialization is the key in today’s job market. He says it’s important to do well in classes, but ultimately making connections and developing a defined career path will be the keys to future success.

Tyler has recently taken an exciting position at Murer Consultants, Inc., a legal based healthcare management consulting firm. Tyler feels extremely fortunate to have found such a great position in such a short amount of time.

We here at the E-Pulse wish Tyler all the best in his future endeavors!
