Breanne Vaclavik graduated from DePaul University College of Law this May with a Certificate in Health Law. Breanne shared with the E-Pulse
her interest in health law, why she chose DePaul Law, her experiences during law school, and advice for current law students.Breanne graduated from the University of Michigan with undergraduate degrees in English and German. During her time at the University of Michigan, her roommate’s passion for the health care field and decision to pursue a master’s degree in public health sparked Breanne’s interest in health law. DePaul seemed like the perfect fit for Breanne to explore her interest in the field and during her first year at DePaul, she became a Health Law Fellow.
As a 2L, Breanne interned at Thiersch & Associates, a boutique health law firm that represents medical spas and also assists clients with licensure, compliance and regulatory issues. The following year, Breanne began working at J.R. Williams Law, LLC, a downtown firm specializing in commercial litigation. Her most exciting experience as a law clerk was being able to co-chair a preliminary injunction hearing in federal court.
When asked about her favorite health law courses at DePaul, Breanne recommended “Health Policy and the Law” and “Health Care Contracts”. In both classes, Breanne enjoyed the discussion based teaching style and experience in drafting documents relevant in everyday practice. For example, in Health Policy and The Law, Breanne was able to get direct feedback from health care personnel for her legislative policy proposal to overhaul the Illinois death investigation system.
Breanne recommends that current law school students expose themselves to as much hands on experience as possible. She suggests that students explore as many areas of law as they can in order to find the best fit.
Breanne plans to take the bar exam after graduation and will return working for the commercial litigation firm as an associate. When asked her ultimate dream job, Breanne responded she would like to become a partner in a firm to be able to be her own boss.
