Letter from the Director

Dear Reader,

Welcome to our new publication!  This newsletter celebrates the Health Law Institute at DePaul University College of Law and the intersection between law and medicine.  This newsletter was developed to serve as a bimonthly update on the Institute’s activities, programming, and scholarship, as well as current issues in health law.  We invite our readers to submit your own articles and health law updates to our Newsletter staff for consideration.  The Newsletter is a complement to our current Journal of Health Care Law, which is a peer reviewed biannual publication.

The Health Law Institute at DePaul was created in 1984 and it was the first ABA-accredited program of its kind in the United States. The Health Law Institute has been consistently ranked among the nation’s top health law programs and our curriculum, faculty, and programming continue to draw students to DePaul to specifically study health law.

The academic year is fully underway and we have already accomplished a great deal at the Institute.  We have redeveloped a relationship with the Illinois Association of Healthcare Attorneys (IAHA) and have co-sponsored a career panel on October 30, 2013 at DePaul.  The HLI also welcomes speakers from Wolters Kluwer and Law ElderLaw for our lecture series this semester.  We are currently planning the annual Health Law Institute Symposium for March of 2014 in the area of pharmaceutical business, with more information to come in future newsletters.  At the end of the last academic year, the HLI revived the Student Board of Directors.  The Board is comprised of 2nd and 3rd year students who are dedicating their time to redesigning and updating the HLI website, developing programming targeting students’ requests, compiling alumni and student email databases for future event marketing, and improving the Fellows program. Through their efforts and those of the HLI faculty, the HLI has already welcomed many new Fellows since the beginning of the semester.

I am also very proud to announce that the HLI has registered two teams for the L. Edward Bryant, Jr. National Health Law Transactional Moot Court Competition in March of 2014.   Participants are HLI Fellows and they were selected through an application process.  This is an important annual competition with many teams that travel in from outside the city of Chicago.

We are excited for the upcoming year and the anticipated changes to the HLI.  I want to thank our HLI faculty, Dean Gregory Mark, Vice Dean David Franklin, the HLI Advisory Board, the health law students, and all of our fans for your continued support.  Enjoy!
