3L Spotlight: Lauren Masching

Lauren Masching will graduate from DePaul University College of Law in May 2017, earning her Juris Doctorate with a Certificate in Health Law.

Lauren graduated and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Iowa in 2011. Upon graduation, she worked for a Behavioral Health Hospital as a nurse. In addition to practicing nursing, Lauren helped train psychiatrists, nurses, clinical therapists, and Behavioral Health Associates during the hospitals implementation of a new medical record system. She has also worked as clinical support for the hospital. During her time working within the health care system, Lauren realized she wanted to pursue her law degree and concentrate in Health Law.

Lauren enjoyed her time at DePaul and took several classes that helped her gain practical experience. She especially enjoyed Litigation Lab where she had the opportunity to assist practicing attorneys with their cases by preparing witnesses and working out closing arguments. She also participated in the Health Law Moot Court course where she enhanced her public speaking, writing, and persuasive skills in preparation for the competition. One of her favorite health law classes was Health Care Delivery Systems where she learned more about managed care and other health insurance programs as a means for financing health care services. Lauren found that DePaul offered a lot of great classes with professors who are very knowledgeable.

She had a great experience with the Health Law Institute and contributed tremendously to the program by participating as a JHLI Board member. Lauren organized several Practitioner Panels and Coffee Talks as the Director of Recruitment and Outreach.

Lauren gives the following advice to future 1Ls: "Get involved and make friends, take breaks and have fun when you can, and remember LARC is not the end of the world -- I promise, the pain (and crying) will end! Additionally, take classes that will help you gain practical experience."

We wish Lauren the best of luck as she prepares to take the Illinois Bar Exam in July of 2017. Before she starts working, she plans to take a mental break and go on a vacation. The first place on her travel list is Punta Cana, which is already booked. We look forward to having Lauren in our alumni network.
