3L Spotlight: Michael Lauth

Michael Lauth, a 2014 DePaul University College of Law graduate, received his Juris Doctorate with a Certificate in Health Law this Spring.  Michael shared with the E-Pulsehis law school experience, future plans, and advice for future health law students.

Michael received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Indiana University. His interest in the health care field, however, stems from his parents’ occupations - physician and pediatric nurse. Michael’s future career goal is to practice as a medical malpractice defense attorney.

Michael’s favorite health law courses at DePaul were “Health Care: Fraud and Abuse”, “Medical Malpractice,” and “Insurance Law”.  He also enjoyed his time as a member of the Health Law Moot Court team.  Michael noted “Trial Advocacy”, “Illinois Civil Procedure” and “Evidence” were all classes that have proven very useful in his work experience.

During school, Michael has been clerking for Lipkin and Higgins, a small personal injury firm.  Although he works on the plaintiff’s side, he believes it has been a great experience that will eventually aid his practice as a defense attorney.

When asked if he had any advice for future law students, Michael emphasized finding the right clerkship.  He thinks it would be a mistake to accept a job with a firm just because it was the first one to offer.  Michael’s advice is to try to find an area of law that continues to draw your interest everyday. That way, you can always enjoy what you do!

We here at the E-Pulse wish Michael good luck on the upcoming bar exam and all the best in his future endeavors!
