Katie Liss graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio with a BA in psychology and double minor in sociology and criminology of law in 2002. She received her JD from DePaul University College of Law in 2006. While in law school as a working evening student, she attended a comparative family law course in Granada, Spain, was a dean’s scholar, volunteered with the International Human Rights Law Institute, and authored a published Comment in the DePaul Law Review entitled Amending the Illinois Postconviction Statute to Include Ballistics Testing. 

Prior to joining DePaul, Katie practiced exclusively as a family law attorney in the Chicagoland area for over ten years.  She represented litigants in divorce, paternity, and adoption proceedings, mediated cases, negotiated prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, and was court appointed as a Child’s Representative and Guardian ad Litem.  Katie also taught Adoption Law at DePaul as an adjunct.

Kate remains active and involved in professional organizations that support causes she cares about.  Among them are:  Chicago Area Law School Consortium (Chair, 2021-2022; and Member, 2017-Present); Association of American Law Schools (Chair of Aging & the Law Section, 2022-2023; Member, 2021-Present); Chicago Bar Association (2nd Vice President, 2023-Present; Secretary, 2021-2023; Board Member, 2018-Present; Co-Chair of the Alliance for Women, 2021-2022; Founder and Chair of the Task Force Against Sexual Harassment, 2020-Present; Record Editorial Board, 2018-Present; Founder and Past Chair of the Anti-Human Trafficking Committee, 2017-Present; and Past Chair of the Young Lawyers Section, 2016-2017); Force of Lawyers Against Sexual Harassment (Founder and Member, 2020-Present); Miami University’s Pre-Law Alumni Advisory Board (Member, 2018-Present); Chicago Bar Foundation (Board Member, 2015-2020); Center for Conflict Resolution (Board Member, 2017-2018); and Collaborative Law Institute of Illinois (Fellow, 2012-2014).

The Illinois Supreme Court appointed Katie to serve as a member of the Committee on Character and Fitness in the First District of Illinois.
