Student Involvement

1L Family Law Fellows

The Center welcomes a new class of 1L Family Law Fellows each year. These competitive fellowships are awarded to a limited number of incoming 1L students who demonstrate a strong interest in family law—whether in the public or private sector—along with a record of academic excellence and leadership.

Fellows receive financial stipends that support 10-week, full-time internships in family law during the summer following their 1L year.  During the academic year, Fellows meet monthly with the center director and participate in professional development programming, including practitioner lunches focused on current topics in the field. They also engage in pro bono and community service projects, such as the Practitioner & Student Legal Answers Pro Bono Clinic in Family Law and volunteering with partners like Ascend Justice’s Emergency Order of Protection Clinic.

Fellowship Selection Criteria

  • Interest in/commitment to practicing family law
  • Academic record
  • Leadership skills
Application Process

Incoming DePaul Law 1L students should submit a resume, unofficial undergraduate transcript, and a 2-3 page personal statement addressing how they meet the above criteria to Executive Director Kathryn Liss with the subject line "DePaul Family Law Fellowship Application." Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis beginning January 1st.
