Internships & Externships

Internship and externship opportunities provide students with valuable legal experience and serve as a significant first step on their career paths. CAMCHL assists students with career development and networking by helping students gain internship and externship positions in local, national and international law firms, museums, government offices, cultural institutions and nonprofit organizations. CAMCHL also helps provide students with scholarships to assist with the financial costs of these externships.

Recent externship placements include the Chicago History Museum, the Field Museum of Natural History, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Sotheby’s, the Association on American Indian Affairs and the Art-Law Centre at the University of Geneva.

For more information on how to secure an internship or externship in the field of art, museum and cultural heritage law, please contact Patty Gerstenblith , Director, Center for Art, Museum & Cultural Heritage Law. Please note that CAMCHL does not guarantee student placement with any of the organizations listed above.

"My externship with the Bureau of Customs & Border Protection in Chicago was one of my most rewarding experiences so far in law school... My ultimate career goal would be to work as a litigator in the customs and international trade sector and I think that my experience at Customs & Border Protection, more than anything else, helped set me down that path." - Kyle Brennan, JD '14

"I was fortunate enough to work as Professor Gerstenblith's research assistant... This opportunity was one of the best parts about my experiences at DePaul so far. I was able to receive personal feedback about my legal research and writing skills while working with one of the leaders in the field of cultural heritage."- Maggie Rhoda, JD '15

"I was [an extern] at Sotheby's Auction House in New York City... The internship was very much like a 'shadowing' experience – a lot of the time I was invited by the compliance team to sit in on meetings or attend court proceedings. Meetings ranged from the weekly compliance call with the London compliance counterparts, to meetings with outside counsel in Brazil and India, to meetings with Sotheby's specialists regarding provenance due diligence." - Corinne Smith, JD '15
