Meet Margaret Kawarski, a 3L at the DePaul University College of Law. She is a Double Demon and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Bioscience. A proud Chicago native and first-generation college graduate, Margaret has many accomplishments to celebrate.
Despite her decision to attend law school, Margaret remained interested in healthcare and decided to pair her undergraduate studies with her passion for the legal profession. She joined the Jaharis Health Law Institute during her first year of law school and has since been involved with JHLI in numerous aspects. Margaret participated in the Summer Scholars Program, gaining a paid summer scholar position with the American Medical Association following her first year of law school. She currently serves as Director of Programming for JHLI and also served as Editor in Chief for the Journal of Health Care Law.
Throughout her time at DePaul, Margaret’s favorite courses were Trial Advocacy and Torts. The courses she found most helpful, in addition, were Legal Writing and Civil Procedure. Some advice she offered to rising 1Ls and 2Ls is to gain as much work experience as possible, and more specifically, to dabble in different areas of law. “You won’t know what you like until you try it,” she said. Among other notable accomplishments throughout her law school career are completing a judicial externship for the Honorable Mark Joseph Lopez in the Domestic Relations Division. This exposed her to the ins and outs of litigation and now she feels prepared to pursue a career in the same.
Given her love for her hometown and sense of community, Margaret plans to stay in Chicago and seek a career in healthcare litigation in the near future. As a young Polish-American, Margaret has been involved with The Advocates Society since her 1L year, an association of Polish-American attorneys which promotes the progress of the law and the administration of justice and fosters interest in Polish-American culture and heritage. She plans to use her Polish language proficiency to fortify her Polish community involvement.
Margaret is currently a law clerk at SmithAmundsen in the healthcare litigation group. A former figure skater, Margaret now coaches aspiring figure skaters during her free time and also enjoys traveling. Looking back on her past three years at DePaul, she shared that some of her fondest memories are of spending time with her classmates, both in and outside of the classroom.
