The Health Law Institute invited health law practitioners, DePaul College of Law faculty, and exceptional health law students to the Union League Club on May 15, 2014, to celebrate the accomplishments and successes of the last year. The Institute welcomed Interim Dean of the Law School, Bruce Ottley, Director of the Health Law Institute, Katherine Schostok, and Honored Speaker, Tom Fahey of Ungaretti and Harris, to speak on the triumphs of this past year.Director Katherine Schostok addressed the tremendous progress the Health Law Institute has made during the 2013-2014 academic year. This year the Institute hosted their Annual Health Law Symposium on The Changing Landscape of Pharmaceutical Law & Business with record attendance, both in person and via live stream. The Institute has also revitalized their bimonthly newsletter, aptly renamed the E-Pulse, in addition to publishing five issues of the Journal of Health Care Law. The Institute has also welcomed a new relationship with Wolters Kluwer this year, a distinguished addition to the Institute’s successful lecture series. The Health Law Institute is currently working towards Compliance Certification by the Compliance Certification Board (CCB) and would be the seventh school in the nation to offer this type of certification. Lastly, DePaul welcomed two new faculty members this year to join the Institute’s Advisory Board, Assistant Professor of Law, Wendy Epstein, and Associate Professor, Max Helveston.
Interim Dean Bruce Ottley spoke on behalf of the DePaul faculty and administration. Dean Ottley imparted upon the Reception guests the importance of the Institute as the health law field continues to evolve, creating more opportunities for DePaul Health Law Fellows. Under the direction of the new Director, Dean Ottley was confident that the Institute will continue to succeed with the support from the faculty and administration, along with the great support of our alumni.
Tom Fahey, Class of 1980, was the Honored Speaker of the event. Mr. Fahey spoke briefly on how he stumbled into the legal field of health care and how health law continues to change everyday. Mr. Fahey’s passion for his alma mater was evident in the way he spoke about the Institute, as well as his role on the Advisory Board. Lastly, Mr. Fahey encouraged current law students to become more involved in the Institute if they have an interest in the fast-paced environment of health care law. Mr. Fahey is a managing partner at Ungaretti & Harris.
Overall the Reception was a great success and the Health Law Institute hopes to make this celebration a yearly event! We look forward to seeing you next year!
