Professor Lewis began his legal career as an attorney in the Bureau of Consumer Protection of the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. In 1978, he was appointed assistant regional director of the FTC’s Chicago Regional Office. In 1980, he began his teaching career at Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis. An early article written by Professor Lewis on attorney debt collectors influenced a revision of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act that made attorneys subject to its provisions. In addition to his teaching and scholarship, Professor Lewis has been actively involved in University governance. He has served as the president of Faculty Council and on numerous University committees. For the past few years, Professor Lewis taught commercial law classes as a visiting professor at Northwestern University School of Law. In academic year 2001-2002, he served as acting dean of the College of Law. On his retirement in 2014, Professor Lewis received emeritus status and the Via Sapientiae Award, the university's highest academic honor.
