A Victory for the Civil Litigation Clinic

Allie H. Headshot
The Civil Litigation Clinic won an eviction bench trial before Cook County Judge Robert Harris, successfully arguing that the clinic client, a young man with schizophrenia, did not intentionally cause a fire in his apartment last summer. Clinic students prepared the case for trial after conducting written discovery and four depositions, with 2019 graduate, Allie Miceli, co-chairing the trial with clinic director, David Rodriguez. Judge Harris highlighted Miceli’s cross-examination of the landlord’s building custodian in concluding that the fire was an accidental grease fire. This case is representative of the work the Civil Litigation Clinic does every semester, preparing students to litigate in any forum through representing indigent clients in lawsuits of great personal consequence.
