DePaul Law’s Successful 2021-2022 Competition Season

Moot Court Team

Based on the many successes of the DePaul Moot Court Team in national competitions over the past academic year, DePaul ranked 58 in the 2021-2022 University of Houston Law Center Blakely Advocacy Institute Moot Court Program Rankings.

Coached by a dedicated group of DePaul law alumni, Moot Court Team members competed at the Hispanic National Bar Association Moot Court Competition, winning first-place for Best Petitioner's Brief. The team then competed in the oral rounds against 29 other teams, and after five excellent rounds of oral arguments, they placed second nationally. The team also won multiple scholarships as a result of their stellar performances.

Also coached by DePaul law alumni, two Moot Court Team members competed in the Midwest Regional Black Law Student Association Thurgood Marshall Moot Court Competition. Team members faced tough competitors and made the College of Law proud with their many accomplishments, including second place overall in the Midwest Region, first runner up for Best Brief and winner of the Best Oral Advocate award. The team advanced to the national competition where they placed among the top 16 teams in the nation.

Finally, a team member was named one of the Best Oral Advocates in the Midwest Region New York City Bar Moot Court Competition.

National Trial Team

DePaul’s National Trial Team competed at the Texas Young Lawyers Association's National Trial Competition where team members went undefeated, beating Chicago Kent, St. Louis University and Washington University.  This was the first time since 2006 that DePaul reached the finals of the Regional National Trial Competition.  In the finals, DePaul competed against Northwestern, and in a very close round, they lost to Northwestern, where three judges voted in favor of Northwestern and two in favor of DePaul.

At the American Association for Justice's Student Trial Advocacy Competition (STAC), the DePaul team was named Regional Champion and moved on to the National Competition. DePaul was the only team in the region to go undefeated throughout the competition, beating teams representing the universities of Marquette, Missouri, St. Thomas and UIC.  In the finals, DePaul defeated Chicago Kent and advanced to the National Competition. This is the first time DePaul has been crowned Regional Champion of STAC.

Lastly, at the King of the Hill Trial Competition, a team member was named Best Advocate in each round that she was an advocate.
