When BDS Infects ESG: An International Case Study HQed in Chicago
February 9, 2023 (12:00–1:30 pm)
ESG is a revolution in the investment world. Trillions of ESG dollars are already under management, and tens of trillions more will be in the next few years. Accompanying that explosive growth is the importance of the ratings of such investments. In 2020 Chicago-based ratings heavyweight Morningstar Inc. bought Sustainalytics, Europe’s leading ESG rater. But they got more than they bargained for: they inherited the company’s BDS-friendly ESG assumptions, terminologies, news sources, and more. Hear from the two Jewish communal professionals—one in the ESG world and the other in the Chicago Jewish advocacy arena—who worked collaboratively and successfully, and who enlarged the circle of advocates to bring about meaningful, if not (yet) total change.
Presenters: Marc Bassewitz, General Counsel, William Harris Investors (moderator); Julie Hammerman, CEO and Founder, JLens; Jay Tcath, Executive Vice President, Jewish United Fund ChicagoAntisemitic Influences in DEI Programs - Can They Be Corrected?

3 hours CLE credit available
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (“DEI”) are extremely important human rights ideals, and educational programming is an essential element in the effort to achieve them. On campus and in the workplace, there has been a dramatic and pervasive rise in DEI personnel and programming. At the same time that ever-increasing resources are devoted to DEI, there has been an unprecedented explosion in virulent, hateful antisemitism. This program—and its outstanding presenters—examines whether these two developments are interrelated. It explores whether factors such as bias in DEI personnel, programs, and teachings deny the authentic Jewish experience and falsely label all Jews as merely part of the wrongfully “privileged White.”

Holocaust and The Law: Lessons for Today
February 9, 2020 (all day)Co-sponsored with Chicago Kent College of Law's Center for National Security and Human Rights Law
Although seventy-five years have passed, the impact of the Holocaust continues to reverberate to this day. We began this intensive all-day seminar by exploring the Nazi legal architecture that prepared the groundwork for the Holocaust and the actors that made it happen. We went on to discuss how the world brought the perpetrators to justice, and how those lessons were incorporated into contemporary war crimes trials and integrated in modern litigation. Finally, we explored the role of the bystander and address ways in which our society can properly immunize itself to help ensure that such dark historical events are never repeated.
