Maria L. Vertuno joined the College of Law Student Affairs staff in 2017, where she serves as the Director of Student Advising. Prior to coming to DePaul, she spent several years directing the undergraduate pre-law programs at the University of Chicago and Bradley University. Ms. Vertuno has taught courses at both the law school and undergraduate levels on the legal profession, legal writing and trial advocacy. Before working in higher education, Ms. Vertuno practiced law in Chicago for 15 years, where her practice focused primarily on the defense of medical malpractice cases. She spent several years as an associate with two other Chicago law firms before joining Cassiday Schade LLP, where she later became a partner with the firm.

Benjamin E. Alba

Professor Benjamin E. Alba joined the College of Law faculty in 2002, where he serves as Director of Academic Success & Bar Passage. Prior to coming to DePaul, he practiced law with the Chicago firm of William J. Sneckenberg & Associates, Ltd. for 19 years (12 as partner) at both the trial and appellate levels in the state and federal courts. His areas of practice included personal injury, insurance, property damage, medical malpractice, fraud and civil rights, and he also was responsible for hiring and supervising the firm’s law clerks and associates. From 1990 to 2015, he served as an arbitrator for the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois. While in practice, he also served on the adjunct faculty of Loyola University Chicago School of Law, teaching Legal Writing, Moot Court and Pretrial Litigation. At DePaul, Professor Alba has taught Legal Analysis, Research & Communication (LARC), Legal Drafting, Remedies and Bar Passage Strategies, as well as Academic Success and Bar Passage workshops.
