Softest/Examsoft Exams

A few days before the exam

Before installing Softest, you should check or have LTT check your laptop to ensure:

  • It meets Softest specifications Your operating system (Windows or Mac) is up to date Your anti-virus software is up to date Your hard disc has enough space (10GB or more free space)

Before you install or update Softest we highly recommend that you have your laptop inspected well before exams begin. See the Law Technology Team (LTT) for assistance.

Install or re-install Softest to ensure that it works and download and take the mock exam.

Exam day

  • Make sure you have your computer plugged in or fully charged
  • Make sure your Campus Connect information is on-hand
  • Turn on the computer and follow the proctor's instructions
  • Start Softest, then select your exam document from the dropdown menu
  • Type in the exam password provided by the proctor
  • Do not go beyond the STOP sign until the proctor signals the start of the exam
  • Type BEGIN in the allocated box when instructed by the proctor

After the exam

Shortly after you exit and save your exam, Softest will unlock all applications on your computer and will attempt to upload your answer file to ExamSoft, Softest's parent company. Depending on how busy the wireless network is, it may take a few seconds to a few minutes before your answer file is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Softest laptop requirements?

Your laptop must meet or exceed the following specifications to be compatible with Softest:
  • Operating System - Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8, Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), 
    or higher, including Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan).
  • Screen Resolution - 1024x768 or higher
  • Minimum disk space and memory - 2 GB RAM, 1 GB free hard disk space.
  • Network connection - Ethernet or wireless network connection to download exams and upload exam answers.

When is Softest installation required?

You only need to install Softest at the beginning of the school year in fall semester. However, you will need to install Softest for spring semester if you are a transfer student or haven’t installed Softest in fall semester. Please note that you may need to update Softest in any semester if an update exists. Visit DePaul College of Law ExamSoft site at examsoft.com/depaullaw for detailed instructions on downloading, installing and registering Softest. ​

How do I install Softest

  1. Visit the College of Law Examsoft portal, examsoft.com/depaullaw​.
  2. Login using your student ID and password for Softest.
  3. Click Download Softest, then follow the prompts.
  4. Complete the installation and registration process.
  5. Download your exams if any including the mock exam. Take the mock exam.
After the installation is complete, you should receive confirmation email from ExamSoft that you are registered to use Softest. 

How do I update Softest?

  1. Click on the Softest icon to open Softest Windows - Press the CTRL button and the letters A and U at the same time.>
  2. Mac OSX - Press the CMND key and the letters A and U simultaneously.
  3. Click Yes when prompted to accept

Important: the update may take several minutes.​

My downloaded exams are missing after I updated Softest. What do I do?

Important: Update Softest before you download your exams!
If you downloaded your exam before updating Softest, you will need to Reverse Download the exam after completing the update. ​

How do I reverse download an exam?

Windows
  1. Open Softest and press Ctrl + F3. 
    Note: if your keyboard has the function key FN, you may have to hold Ctrl+F3+FN at the same time.
  2. Select the file that you wish to reverse download then click "Remove".
  3. Click "Yes" to confirm you wish to remove the exam.
Repeat this process for every exam file you need to remove.

Mac OSX
  1. Open Softest and press CMND + F3 simultaneously 
    (or the Apple key + F3. Note: if your keyboard has an FN key,
    you may have to hold CMND+F3+FN at the same time.
  2. Select the file that you wish to remove then click on Remove Downloaded Exam(s).
Repeat this process for every exam file you need to remove. 

When and how do I download my exams?

One week before your exam, you will receive a notification email from ExamSoft.
Start SofTest, select Download Exam Files then login when prompted.
One or more of your exams will be ready for download.
Highlight then download your exam(s) to your laptop.
Click Done when finished then exit Softest.
Make sure to download your exams as soon as you receive notification of their availability.

How do I download or upload my take-home exam?

You need to download your take-home exam from the Assignment Drop Box.

  1. Visit examsoft.com/depaullaw​.
  2. Login using your student ID and password.
  3. Click on Courses or History.
  4. Click on the Assignment Drop Box.
  5. Highlight your take-home assignment then select the appropriate action to download or upload the assignment.

Can I access documents on my laptop during open-note exams?

No. Once started, SofTest restricts access to all applications, folders and documents.
Make sure to print all documents you need for your exam before you start the exam. ​

Do I need access to the Internet during my exam?

No. You only need internet access:

  • To download your exams and
  • To upload your exam answers.

During the exam, your answers will be saved to the local disk of your laptop. ​

In case your computer stops responding during exam:

  1. Turn off your computer by holding the power button and or removing both the battery and power cable from the laptop.
  2. Wait a few seconds, then restart your computer.
  3. Softest should resume from the point it froze earlier.
  4. In case the ‘SofTest Restart’ window appears, click RESTART.
  5. If Softest fails to open, you should hand write the rest of your exam.

Blue books are located on the front desk of the classroom. At the end of the exam, turn in your blue books and all required material to the proctor, sign the sign-out sheet then take your computer to the tech team for help uploading the typed portion of your exam ​
