First Generation Law
Student Organization Networking Mixer

DePaul First Generation Law Student Organization (First Gen) was founded in August 2020. First Gen was created to support—academically, financially and socially—those who identify as first-generation law students and come from a low-income or working-class background in reaching graduation and preparing for their careers.

On Nov. 8, universities across the country observe First-Generation Student Celebration Day. First Gen has planned a week of events for our members, one of which will be our networking event for first-generation law students to connect with first-generation professionals in the legal field.

This event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 12 from 6-7:30 p.m. via Zoom, and is open to the DePaul Law community, including current students, alumni and faculty/staff. Our speakers will include College of Law Dean Jennifer Rosato Perea and keynote speaker Ashlee Germany, Esq. ('19).

Volunteer Opportunity: Pro Bono & Community Service Initiative

In celebration of National Pro Bono Week, the Pro Bono & Community Service Initiative is partnering with the Schiller DuCanto & Fleck Family Law Center and the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) for a virtual pro bono clinic on Friday, Oct. 30 from 1-3 p.m., where students and attorneys will partner to answer additional civil legal questions through Illinois Free Legal Answers. The clinic will be conducted online. Illinois Free Legal Answers is a secure website, run by PILI, where lower income Illinois residents can ask a lawyer for help with civil legal issues. The Pro Bono & Community Service Initiative will match alumni with law students who will research and draft the initial answers, and the alumni will review and post the answers.

The clinic will be conducted online and attorneys can receive 0.5 CLE credits from this event. Training and materials will be provided.

If you would like to participate in the clinic, please email Lauren Worsek, PBCSI director, at lworsek@depaul.edu by Oct. 26. If you are actively barred in Illinois, please provide your ARDC number. If you are barred in another state or have inactive status, please provide that information.
