The Hon. Sandra A. Simms ('78) was a speaker at the first
annual Emancipation Day celebration at Chaminade University in Honolulu.
Keith A. Hebeisen ('83) has been named to the 2021 edition
of "Best Lawyers in America" and the National Trial Lawyers Top
100 of 2020. He also was the senior member of a trial team that obtained
a record verdict of more than $100 million in a medical malpractice trial
in November 2019. He is a partner with Clifford Law Offices in Chicago.
The Honorable Franklin U. Valderrama ('88) was confirmed
by the United States Senate to serve as a Judge on the United States
District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Prior to this
appointment, Judge Valderrama served as an Associate Judge in the Circuit

Dr. Kaveh T. Safavi ('94) spoke at the inaugural TriNet
PeopleForce virtual conference for small and medium size businesses. He
is senior managing director of global health business for Accenture.
Angela R. Smith ('95) has joined the board of The
International Center, which expands Indiana's global interest through a
variety of programs and services. Smith Jones is vice president of
diversity and inclusion at Marion County Health and Hospital Corp. in
Indiana.
Aaron B. Zarkowsky ('95) has joined the corporate
department of Honigman LLP. He works out of the firm's Chicago office.
Amalia Martinez ('03) is the acting employee relations
director of the department of human resources for the City of San
Francisco.
Faculty News
Professor of Law Joshua Sarnoff commented on an empirical
paper on patent eligible subject matter and bioinformatics at the Loyola
U. Chicago School of Law Wiet Life Science Law Scholars Workshop held on
Sept. 18.
In October, Professor Sarnoff published Research Paper 119
for the South Centre, an intergovernmental organization, on TRIPS
Flexibilities on Patent Enforcement: Lessons from Some Developed
Countries Relating to Pharmaceutical Patent Protection, available here.
Raymond P. Niro Professor of Intellectual Property Law
Roberta Kwall was named "Jew of the Week" on the number one
rated Jewish Podcast in the country—Unorthodox (sponsored by Tablet
Magazine)—discussing how to "remix" two of the least well-known
Jewish holidays. The podcast can be found here.
In addition, Professor Kwall is speaking in October at synagogues in New
York and Toronto and also speaking about "An Integrated Approach to
Tikkun Olam in Remix Judaism" at the Midwest Jewish Studies
Conference.
Professor Kwall published the following Op-Ed
in the Jewish Journal on the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the
United States Supreme Court.
