3L Spotlight Aaron Bengtson

Aaron will graduate from DePaul University College of Law in May 2019 with a Juris Doctor degree and a Health Law Certificate. Aaron grew up in Huntley Illinois located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. He attended DePaul University in undergrad and received his degree in Political Science.

In discussing his favorite classes, Aaron shared he enjoyed Constitutional Law, Health Law and Policy and Healthcare Delivery Systems. He explained these two health law classes solidified his interest in health law. The classes Aaron took as well as his externships, greatly prepared him for the types of issues he sees on a regular basis, including HIPPA issues, regulatory guidance requests, and policy drafting.

Being a health law fellow of the Jaharis Health Law Institute has provided Aaron several opportunities and great experiences. In addition to health law classes and attending luncheons, he obtained internships at the American Medical Association and R1 RCM through the Summer Scholar program. He also secured an internship at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in the fall of 2016, which he contributes to his experienced he received the summer before. Aaron’s said his participation in JHLI was extremely valuable.

Upon asking Aaron what advice he would giving to rising 1L’s and 2L’s he said, “Whatever you decide to focus on in law school, whether it’s practical experience like externships or journals or taking courses in an interesting subject matter or a healthy balance of everything, do so meaningfully. Don’t overburden yourself with too many things, such that you’re unable to dive deep into any of these experiences and really learn them. It’s better to focus on fewer activities and really make the most out of them.”

This summer Aaron will be studying for the Illinois bar. Aaron will be returning full time to his position at R1 RCM Inc. as a Compliance Analyst, where he has been working part-time since he secured this position through his involvement with the Legal and Compliance departments last summer as a JHLI Summer Scholar. After taking the bar, Aaron and his girlfriend are taking a trip to California to visit family, camp at Yosemite, and will explore Universal Studios!

On reflecting where his legal education will take him, Aaron reveals he has been given a great opportunity at R1 to participate in a growing compliance department. There he is able to apply his legal education in a very practical way, and he is excited to return.

At the finish line looking back, Aaron said his time at DePaul, both in undergrad and in law school, was a formative experience that shaped much of who he is today. He shares that it was a lot of work, day in and day out, and was ultimately worth every minute!

Here at E-PULSE we wish Aaron good luck on studying for the bar!
