Kathryn Brown graduates this May from DePaul University College of Law with a Certificate in Health Law and a wealth of experience and advice for law students seeking to pursue careers in the health law field.
Kathryn graduated from Saint Ambrose University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a concentration in International Politics. While studying abroad in London the summer before her senior year, Kathryn worked for a Minister of Parliament. The opportunity to see law in the making inspired her to go to law school.
While at the College of Law, Kathryn was very involved in the Jaharis Health Law Institute (JHLI), acting as a fellow and Co-Director of Programming for the Institute, an editor for the JHLI E-Pulse, and a member of the moot court team that competed at the Health Law Regulatory and Compliance Competition at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. Kathryn also served as the Managing Editor of Lead Articles for the DePaul Law Review where she had the opportunity to select and edit the articles that the journal published. As a student, her favorite class at DePaul was Food and Drug Law. She really enjoyed learning about the various legal tools and degrees of control that the FDA uses to protect public health.
Outside of the classroom, Kathryn worked for several different organizations. Following 1L year, Kathryn worked for the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services where she assisted Administrative Law Judges in deciding Medicaid appeals. She also worked at the Illinois Health and Hospital Association and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. At both positions, she enjoyed contributing to projects that furthered the interests of the organizations. Kathryn also externed for the Honorable Joan H. Lefkow in the District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, in addition to being a research assistant to Professors Epstein and Feinberg.
Kathryn recommends that students find something that keeps their life balanced. Having an outlet to disconnect from the stress of law school helps. Kathryn also encourages students to seek advice from Professors Epstein and Schostok, as they are incredible sources of support and knowledge.
In the coming year, Kathryn will continue her job search, and she hopes to pursue a career in transactional and regulatory health law. After she graduates, Kathryn will be preparing to take the Illinois Bar exam. Everyone with the JHLI and E-Pulse wishes Kathryn the best of luck as she continues on her legal journey!
