The Health Law Institute sponsored two teams to compete in the L. Edward Bryant Jr. National Health Law Transactional Moot Court Competition, held each spring at Loyola University’s Corboy Law Center in Chicago. The competition exposes students to the corporate and regulatory practice of health care law, challenging them to apply lawyering skills by providing legal advice to a hypothetical health care client. The Competition is a wonderful opportunity for DePaul students to gain practical and transactional experiences outside the classroom.The Health Law Institute provided a mentor for each team who aided students with their public speaking, writing, and persuasive skills. In addition, the Institute provided access to practicing attorneys to allow for improvement on each student's oral and presentation skills.
Yesenia Perez, a team member, summarized the experience by saying: “Being on the Moot Court team this year has been an absolutely challenging, yet extremely rewarding experience. Although I have enrolled in a number of health law courses through the Health Law Institute, joining the Moot Court team provided me with practical and transactional experience that I may not have been able to get in the classroom. With the help of our coach, Professor Schostok, our overall public speaking, writing, and persuasive skills have improved immensely which came through in our final presentation.”
