Certificate Requirements
IP: General
To earn a Certificate in General Intellectual Property, a student must complete the eighty-six (86) semester hours required for the Juris Doctor degree and satisfy all JD requirements. Within the elective course work required for the JD degree, a student must fulfill the following requirements:
- Complete at least fifteen (15) credit hours from the listed Intellectual Property courses
- Complete the courses listed under one of the following two options:
- Students must take the Intellectual Property Law Survey and two of the following courses:
- Patent Law
- Copyright Law *
- Trademark and Unfair Competition Law
- Students must take all of the following courses:
- Patent Law
- Copyright Law
- Trademark and Unfair Competition Law
- Choose two electives, one of which must be a seminar or practicum
- Earn a minimum GPA of 3.2 in all IP courses
- All courses are three (3) credits unless otherwise indicated. Certificate courses may not be audited.
- Please note that if a student takes more than 15 hours of IP/IT courses or practicums, all grades earned in those courses will be factored into the minimum 3.2 GPA requirement.
- Occasionally new seminars or courses may be added or available on a one-time basis which would be appropriate electives for this certificate. Students may contact Professor Barbara Bressler to seek approval for elective credit for such courses

*Students planning to apply for the General IP Certificate this year will NOT be able to count both Professor Kwall's IP Survey Course and her Copyright course toward the IP General Certificate Students may take Professor Livingston's Copyright Class for IP Certificate Credit if they have already taken Professor Kwall's Survey Course. NOTE THAT THIS ANNOUNCEMENT ONLY AFFECTS CURRENT THIRD AND FOURTH YEAR STUDENTS WHO HAVE ALREADY TAKEN KWALL'S IP SURVEY IN THE FALL, 2010.
