The Sullivan Human Rights Fellowship Program
Each year, DePaul University College of Law and the International Human Rights Law Institute offer five fellowships named in honor of IHRLI benefactors Jeanne M. and Joseph P. Sullivan. The prestigious Sullivan Fellowship Program provides students with the opportunity to participate in the substantive work of IHRLI worldwide.
The five students selected as Sullivan Fellows receive $4,000 in tuition remission per semester in return for a commitment to work from ten to fifteen hours per week during the academic year. Under the supervision of IHRLI staff, Sullivan Fellows work individually and in groups on human rights research projects. Project work will result in either a scholarly or activist-oriented publication, which focuses on a critical human rights issue related to the annual theme. Fellows may also be expected to work cooperatively on organizing a conference to be held in the Spring semester. In addition to their formal responsibilities, Sullivan Fellows are invited to all programs and events sponsored by IHRLI.

Applications for the 2009-2010 academic year are due on September 4, 2009 and available in the IHRLI offices, or via email on request. For more information, please contact irhli@depaul.edu
The selection committee chooses Sullivan Fellows based on a number of factors including academic record, experience in human rights, international activities, and relevant course work. Special skills that would be helpful in particular IHRLI projects will also be considered. Although knowledge of a foreign language is most likely to be of assistance, other skills may be important for certain projects. Given the diversity of projects undertaken by the Institute, students are encouraged to include sufficient information on their applications so that their skills can be matched to current and expected future needs.
