Instituto Superiore Internazionale di Scienze Criminali (ISISC)

ISISC was founded in 1972 to provide specialized post-graduate education and training programs, and to conduct research in the field of criminal justice. The Institute was developed as a joint project of the International Association of Penal Law and the city, province, and Chamber of Commerce of Siracusa, as well as the city of Noto and the Sicilian Region. The Institute has been recognized as a non-governmental organization with consultative status with the United Nations and the Council of Europe, and has a special cooperative agreement with the U.N. Center for International Crime Prevention. In 1985, the Institute began a program on human rights in the Arab world. As part of this program, a series of seminars have been developed to teach human rights in Arab law schools, judicial training centers, and police academies. Proceedings of seminars, conferences, and meetings of experts are published by the Institute, as well as other materials related to Institute research.

Professor M. Cherif Bassiouni is the President of both ISISC and IHRLI, and the two institutions have a longstanding cooperative relationship.

Center for Human Rights in the Americas

In 2003, the Institute opened the Center for Human Rights in the Americas in San Jose, Costa Rica which is directed by Victor Rodriguez Rescia, a Costa Rican law professor and former Assistant Secretary and Head of Legal Affairs at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. The Center supports advocacy, training, research and other Sullivan Program activities. The Center works closely with the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights which are based in Costa Rica.

The Center also actively supports Latin American ratification of the Statute of the International Criminal Court and has provided human rights training for government officials in Ecuador and Honduras, supported the expanding role of public defenders in the region, and built networks for improved advocacy within the Inter-American Human Rights System.
